STURGIS, SD - DAY ONE

July 16, 2015

After getting the generator serviced with no problems, we continued to head east. We decided to forego the interstate and head to Sturgis via US 212 and SD 34. We did, however, have to jump back on the interstate for approximately 15 miles, which put us yet again in a construction zone!

Our drive was quite pleasant and we were able to see more of what lies beyond the interstate! We drove through Indian reservations that are homes to the Crow and Northern Cheyenne tribes. As we were getting ready to leave  the Northern Cheyenne Reservation, a Department of the Interior truck with "Sheriff" blazed on it was making an entrance to one of the small villages. Unfortunately, we did not get a photo because we didn't think much of a white Ford truck hauling a boxed trailer until we realized what it actually was! This reminded me of how the Alaska State Troopers deal with the crime in the outer banks and the public service officers, and when the big guns have to come and take care of something!

I can probably go on and on and on about how beautiful the United States of America is but I won't, or will I? There are so many people flying above the country in planes and not really seeing the true beauty and wonder that lies beneath the clouds. Seeing the clouds above you and the land beside you is like a dessert. It is such a treat and so sweet to see, but at times very eye-opening! The littlest of things like hay stacks lining the fields all rolled up or stacked is quite a vision that you really don't think about until you see it. Or the glimpse of an antelope or two in the fields, that you have to keep in your memory box because you just can't capture it on film. The poverty that the Indians endure but when you see them walking on the highway they have smiles on their face and wave. The harvest on the hills that change color from mile-to-mile. The color of the rocks and the shapes that make you wonder how they got there in the first place! The cows and the horses that graze everywhere but you see no true farm or barns to house them. The aged abandoned buildings and homes that make me wonder what exactly is in there that hasn't yet to be discovered. I could never tell you everything we have seen but I can say this, we have taken our time and have not rushed. We are revisiting areas we have driven through before and recognize the fact that not much has changed in two years, thank goodness! I guess what I am saying is that we take too much for granted in what we see every day and we need to just stop for a moment, close our eyes, and thank God for this wonderful country of ours!

Now to the present day, we are in Sturgis, South Dakota, a small 2 exit area off I-90 that will be welcoming 1.2 million (yes million) owners driving Harley's, Suzuki's, Honda's, BMW's, choppers, crotch-rockets, Yahama's, Indians, Victories, and whatever else is out there for Bike Week the first week of August. There are folks actually checking in to the RV park here (No Name City Luxury RV Park) including a sponsor who needed our pull-thru spot, as he will be here over a month! We agreed and were thanked profusely for giving up our spot; however, this put us in an area in the park wherein Thom had to literally back the RV up a hill and into our spot and made leveling a challenge, but as always he did a great job doing so! We had it easier than a few fifth wheels and campers who were brought up this section who also had to back up the hill and into their spots. I would like to put this on record, it is much easier to back up a motorhome than it is a camper and fifth wheel! It was crazy!

Today we are headed to Deadwood, which is about 20 miles from Sturgis. We will tour Sturgis as well. Tomorrow we will find ourselves in Mitchell, SD and hopefully early enough to visit the Corn Palace.

Until next blog ...
