DODGE CITY, KANSAS - DAY 1

May 23, 2015

Where does one begin on a day that brought us to a point where we had to have a layover for almost 2-1/2 hours due to severe weather and then learning 14 miles away a double-18-wheeler jackknifed with fatalities? The best way to start is by thanking God we were where we were supposed to be for our layover, a truck stop in Pratt, Kansas, so thank you God (again).

We knew last night that today would be a challenge due to a storm lurking to the west, heading east. We knew we would take it easy and not rush things, not that we normally do. We knew we would make it to Dodge City whether it was by check-in time or later in the evening if we just took our time, and that we did.

The highways today were a blessing - very smooth with very little to no thumping. If the weather hadn't been such an issue, it would have been a really nice drive through the wheat and corn fields of flat Kansas!

Because of the weather, a lot of our photos are through raindrops but you can see enough of the view through them. The funniest part of the day was running along the railroad tracks with the trains! I think they followed us here!

Once we arrived at Dodge City, we set up camp and are just relaxing, watching college baseball. There is no need to sightsee tonight; we are here for 2 days, 3 nights. We will venture out tomorrow and take in the town; after all, this is Wyatt Earp country!

Although the weather has decided to go bonkers, it is nice to be in cooler temperatures. Today it was 58 degrees while driving through Kingman. The a/c is off and the windows are open! We have needed our jackets and Thom needed his "hoodie" this evening. It could be worse, Colorado is still getting snow! Wait a minute, we are supposed to be there on Tuesday (La Junta)!

Not only was it raining, it was very foggy this morning on our way out of town.

It wasn't getting any better!

Kingman, KS, where the highway turns into cobblestone roads!

Kingman, KS

Pratt, KS - the truck stop we were parked at this afternoon.

Traffic was backed-up because of the accident ahead, but Thom was able to get a photo of our friends "the trains"!

The double 18-wheeler that jackknifed.

We aren't sure but we think there were 2 other vehicles involved based on CB chatter.

More rain - more trains!

We could see where the skies were parting ways between being dark and the sunshine fighting to come out - this was a great sight at a red light!

Welcome to Dodge City, Kansas! We made it, safe and sound.

Hahahaha!

Our home for the next few days!

Until next blog ...
