LA JUNTA, COLORADO

May 26, 2015

We got out of Dodge and landed in La Junta, Colorado! On our way, we could see two mountain ranges in the distance, snow-capped! Excited? Am I excited? Oh yes I am! We have one photo that if you look hard enough you can see it but the clouds were so beautiful today that it's hard to decipher all the "white"!

We had an easy drive along US Highway 50 and came upon the flooding Arkansas River we have been watching carefully the past week or so. The KOA we are staying in is not compromised, just as they said, which is a relief! I don't know if my nerves could handle a flood evacuation after the tornado warning!

As of today, we have seen very little wildlife, which as you know I am obsessed with! We have seen a few turkeys, rabbits, birds galore, and one rump of a deer. Today, Thom wins the prize - he saw a deer head on while I saw it in the rear view mirror! No photos but I'm thinking those pictures will be coming sooner than later! Hey, we're in Colorado and headed towards the Rocky Mountains!

We are here for just the night. We are headed to Larkspur, Colorado where we will be meeting up with some Florida friends and some Texas friends! There is now a 2-hour difference between us and Florida, 1-hour between us and Minnesota!

Enjoy today's photos, mostly taken by Thom!

Until next blog ...

The sky in Dodge City, Kansas - it was wonderful to see white clouds versus dark clouds for the first time in over a week!

Because of the Kansas plains winds, this is a great place for wind power.

We saw this couple riding their bikes on our way to Dodge City. We saw them walking around Dodge City. This morning we saw them leaving Dodge City!

This is a huge wind power supply plant with wind turbines and other large parts!

It is so flat in Kansas you can literally see for miles!

More evidence that beef is a huge industry in Kansas. We have seen so many feeding yards with so many cows fattening up!

The clouds were beautiful today!

We encountered some construction. When I got the green light, a tractor and a truck were still in my one lane!

More amazing cloud configurations!

Maybe just maybe we will see one of these live!

Welcome to Colorado! Yahoo!

We have no idea what the significance is of a Canadian geese tile mural is to this rest area.

We saw the dam from afar and Thom got a really good photo of it (below). This must be the dam the Kansas folks were talking about!

The flooded Arkansas River.

Lots of military vehicles!

John Martin Dam, Bent County, Colorado

More Arkansas River flooding as we near La Junta, Colorado.

It just looked worse and worse. Wow!

Okay - this is a test for your eyes! Look to the right of the "hill". You will see lots of clouds but look closer and you will see a snow-capped mountain top! It's there!
