CALDWELL, IDAHO - DAY THREE

JUNE 21, 2015

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!

We packed in a lot today that includes visiting another vineyard, a museum, Boise and Boise State, and celebrating Father's Day at a great BBQ restaurant in Meridian, Idaho. It was a very warm day, but not as warm as the days ahead of us, which we are hoping the weather report changes drastically in our favor! We shall see.

Tomorrow we head for Baker City, Oregon for four nights. The great staff  here at the Ambassador RV Resort in Caldwell have given us a few ideas of things to do in Baker City and what to expect, which could include a repeat of the winds on I-84! Whatever! And as my sister used to say, "it is what it is". We will do as we usually do and that's pray for a safe trip and then take it from there.

I have to make a correction though about yesterday's blog, i.e. the "lavender fields". We learned today that that is actually alfalfa! We also learned that the bees in the man-made hives are alfalfa leafcutter bees. Here is a link to learn more about this interesting species of bees:

As I mentioned earlier, we are facing some pretty harsh weather during our stay in Washington, when Thom is scheduled to call a few baseball games. The temperature is predicted to hit triple digits, about 30 degrees above normal, and as of this blog the Weather Channel is posting a high of 106 degrees on Monday, June 29, our arrival day in the Spokane area (Deer Park). And, in the city of Pomeroy, Washington, a few days before we arrive in Deer Park, it is forecasted to be 101 to 104 degrees! Thom was informed today by his friend/booking agent that "no games will be cancelled". This I don't understand at all, especially when it is clearly stated in bold print to stay in air conditioned or refrigerated areas; stay out of the direct sun; don't wear dark clothes; drink plenty of water; and, do not participate in strenuous activities especially for the younger and older age groups! He was told there would be a lot of water. I hope the powers that be come to their senses and think safely and not monetarily about this tournament if the temperatures truly reach that magnitude. I have told Thom I am concerned about his health and he agrees. We shall see what lies ahead in Spokane.

STE. CHAPELLE VINEYARD

We got a good laugh out of this street sign!

With all the barley fields in the area, this road makes a lot of sense!

A very lovely vineyard. We did not know that today marked the beginning of their summer entertainment and the place was packed! The wine was quite good; much better than the Sawtooth we visited yesterday.

Across the street from the vineyard entrance are fields of cherry trees. We bought some at the farmer's market and they were the best cherries we have had in a very long time!

Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge - Interesting in that there is a vast difference between "wildlife refuge" offerings from state-to-state. Here, unlike Colorado or Utah, the refuge areas are lakes and/or parks; no off road trails.

WARHAWK AIR MUSEUM

We think this would look great in The Villages!

This museum has so much memorabilia from so many different branches of the military. You could be here for days if you actually looked and/or read everything they have here!

I was on one side of the museum and looked over and this painting caught my eye because we have this painting in our home and have had it for many, many years!

Curtiss P-40E Kittyhawk, "Sneak Attack"

North American P-51C Mustang, "Boise Bee"

WWII Army Air Corp Fleece-Lined Aleutian Parka and Pants

As I was reading this sign, I could hear President Reagan challenge Soviet Union leader Gorbachev to "tear down this wall"!

North American F-86F Sabre, "Bernie's Bo"

Mikoyan-Gurevich MIG-17 - Museum staff informed us that they have the wings and other parts to this aircraft in storage and if put together it could be flown!

Bell UH-1C Huey "Mike" Gunship

Representing the home state of my youth!

F-104 - very cool!

I like this one!

BOISE, IDAHO

The field access was locked because it is Sunday. But, we were able to sneak a peek through the fence and a tear in the webbing lining the fence! I was disappointed, as I thought they actually painted the grass! What do I know! Thom knew! I saw the "Smurt Turf" and called "personal foul"!

What we could see of the stadium and the university, it is quite impressive!

Boise, Idaho

Idaho State Capitol Building

So much construction, it made it difficult to figure out how to get there! We  have found this quite often in the capitol cities we have visited this journey.

MERIDIAN, IDAHO

Of course we would eat in Meridian!

One of the best BBQ restaurants we have dined at.

This is their "small portion" of potato skins, which is done more creatively than we have had in the past; it was almost like scalloped potatoes. We took half home. I will be trying to duplicate this dish in the very near future!

Thom enjoying his half-rack of ribs; my half-chicken. We took half of both these dishes home along with all of our side dishes. The serving size here is quite generous.

Thom's half-rack of ribs, coleslaw (made with peanut butter), and beans.

Until next blog ...
