SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH - DAY ONE

JUNE 13, 2015

Our trip from Green River to Salt Lake City was an easy but windy drive once we got over various mountain passes and into the valley area. I started out with the driving duties this morning and I will never forget going through a pass, into the valley, and the wind pulling the coach, which really startled me. I didn't say anything to Thom at the time but did mention it when he said the same thing. Once we got through the mountains and out of the valleys we were good to go. The wind wasn't so bad after all because we hit city traffic in Provo and it didn't ease up until we pulled into our spot at the KOA! We remembered how crazy Utah drivers are when we were dealt with it once before. The last time we were in the Salt Lake City area we were here on a business trip and did not have the motorhome. Thom, as much as he dislikes driving in the city traffic, did a fine job.

The KOA is quite lovely, busy, but quiet. We are near the trolley system, which made it convenient to head to the Salt Lake Bees AAA baseball game this evening. We missed the first trolley because the ticket machine would not accept our payment! Boy did missing that trolley cost us! The attendance for the Bees' game was insane, claustrophobic.

We didn't get tickets in advance, were late, didn't see the start of the game, and bought tickets from a scalper; that's how crazy it was. The seats were in the upper deck, aisle, past third base, and the first foul ball hit our way (we think) the sun blinded us. We got up at that point and decided to walk the park, which is not unusual for us, but we had to get out of that direct sunlight. This is Utah and it is hot!

We have been to a lot of minor league baseball games and we have never seen so many people lined up at every concession stand. It was so crowded, perhaps because there was going to be fireworks this evening. When we returned to our seats after being away for about an hour, it was nearly impossible to watch the game. Not the sun this time, but every time we got up to let someone out of the row we were in, there would be a play and the folks going up or down the steps would stop right in front of us. We seriously did not get to enjoy the game.

When it was time to catch a bite to eat, we chose the line that had on their menu "Philly Cheesesteak Basket". After waiting in line for 2 innings, we were told they don't have the Philly Cheesesteak Basket anymore! I ordered a jumbo hot dog and was told it would be 10 minutes before they would be ready, so I opted for a regular hot dog. Thom ordered a cheeseburger platter and by the time they had the fries cooked and his platter ready, my hot dog was cold and they were bringing out the jumbo hot dogs! A gentleman behind us was speaking out loud how he was at Fenway and it takes them 2 minutes to get an order out! We spoke to him and in exchanging conversations, he is interested in becoming a baseball official! It was good that Thom had someone to talk to about doing it!

Now, let me say this about Utah and the first time we were here, which was when we were first married! Alcohol was not served in restaurants; you brought in your own and you took it home with you. NOW, there is so much drinking, and I don't mean a regular can of beer, but these 24-ounce cans, and everyone is getting wasted, young and older. And, the people are rude here, at least at the baseball game. For some reason I would think this area would be a bit more "stifled" because of that beautiful Mormon Tabernacle in the middle of the city! Boy times have changed!

With all this being said, we left after the 5th inning. Yes, you read that right, the 5th inning. We didn't even stay for our 7th inning ice cream tradition! We had two empty seats next to us for the longest time and the lady behind the empty seat next to me had her feet up on the back of the seat, making it uncomfortable to sit, and then two ladies showed up (probably for the fireworks) and that was it. Thom and I talked about leaving early but after the 7th inning but that was it. I don't think we sat for more than 5 minutes at a time we were up and down so much. And when we were leaving, there were more folks coming to the stadium, again probably for the fireworks.

We headed to the train station and sure enough we missed the train again for the exact same reason - it would not take our money! Thom was not a happy camper and I was just tired. But, I always say things happen for a reason, and although the "reason" coming up isn't a great one, it was the cherry on a sundae of being in Salt Lake City, Utah! You can fast forward through the photos if you can't wait and you'll see why!

Until next blog ...

US 191/6 North, leaving Green River - the mountains now had a pink hue to them!

The rest area we stopped at for lunch had these birds building nests. It was quite interesting to watch.

The terrain through each mountain pass was spectacular.

Salt Lake City

Traffic on I-15!

Thom riding on the trolley to the baseball game!

What beautiful scenery this ballpark has.

This stadium is huge, and the folks come out to support their home team!

The "Reason"
We have no idea what happened with this "suspect", but all of a sudden the police cars showed up right behind us, right near the tracks, and he was apprehended! The black dog is his dog, and the police had their dog. There were 6 police cars at the scene!
